the merlin tournament of champions thing:

I don't really want to do it. But I kiiiiiiiiiind of do? It's really CONFUSING AS HELL to me, though.

I just want to design team flags okay? I'm kind of not bad at that. So I've been told. Once or twice.

Other than that PFFFT competition? LAME.

also idk how i feel about this whole champions vs grand champions thing? what if the grand champion is someone i dont like? WHAT THEN.

Your thoughts on this: share them.

I am leery of game-type competition, as I have heard too much wank about such things. Pthon is more the level of competitiveness I can handle. But you should still make team flags! That would be brilliant.

I should just make flag logo things for something else and call it a day. :) Maybe I could make a coat of arms for Merlin! Like in that fic with the magic tournament in another kingdom and all the sorcerers have arms?? LOVE THAT FIC. Need to dig it up again...

I am too tired from Pthon and this looks too confusing and scary and competitive. Also, I don't want to be boxed into just one genre... possibly one I don't even like. And I'm already modding for something else. And this looks so confusing... and I'm not really good at games things or fond of competition. Except for Pthon, which I obligatorily rock at because it's miiiine.

Eff pthon maaaan, it is solidly NOT FOR ME. Maybe it was just the team that I had but blah.

What's the other thing you're modding, out of curiosity?

The genre thing annoys me too, but it's weird because it's NOT A GENRE, to me. It's like... hello, what do you even mean by reincarnation? Is reincarnation not utterly intrinsic to many interpretations of canon? What's modern AU vs historical? Where is that line drawn? Ugh. Anyway I wouldn't feel boxed in so much as... pedantic. Different settings give different opportunities for ways of telling a story.

I 110% agree about the not good at games nor fond of competition. I am really BAD at competition, not just because I have no definable skills and no self discipline but because I am an awful loser AND an awful winner. I am a much worse winner than I am a loser, actually. I get all "suck it! in your FACE!" because it's such a rare thing for me and ugh. I am horrible.

What I really want is a comm that throws weekly events like the bonus challenges on pthon, and nothing else. Just silly, loosely defined guidelines and a bunch of people trying to entertain each other and try something new or off the cuff with no pressure, and everyone looks and everyone else's work and leaves happy notes and stuff on them. Fic, art, pictures, playlists, whatever, you know? And then the occasional "have you guys expanded/preposted/polished any of the things you started here? + chatty hang-out posts. Maybe some kind of individual score thing, so no teams but people would get points for participating that could late be redeemed in a marketplace environment for things other members of the comm volunteer to provide? Maybe? IDK! I feel like there isn't a central sort of general merlin funtime creative people comm that hasn't devolved a long time ago into complaining about Arthur's character assassination or scary to any Argwen shippers who might live on LJ, you know? *pout*

I think it could be named Camelot Market Square or something.

ARGH. I told myself that if I did a new fandom I wouldn't get all into making comms and stuff. argharghargh.

This is an interesting idea! It sounds a little bit like merlin_land, which I joined but then failed at after about a week. Have you checked them out?

I'm helping to mod (and might participate in?) merlin_holidays, for a second year. :)
Aug. 23rd, 2011 08:17 am (UTC)
i've NOT checked out merlin_land but I just popped over to their userinfo and see, it's couched as a competition and there are TEAMS and WINNERS and that's the OPPOSITE of what I want. pout pout pout.

merlin_holidays is cute! I feel like sometimes in fandom people are at their best when they're trying to make something to please just one other person. :)

You're right. It's not a genre and isn't referred to as such.
Aug. 23rd, 2011 11:27 pm (UTC)
Regardless of what it's referred to as, it would drive me up the WALL to be stuck into just one of these. Particularly because I'm one of those wonks who just assumes reincarnation is a given for most modAU and golden era canon, and almost all historical, even if it's completely unsaid.

I didn't respond to that portion of your comment because that's your prerogative to not find the challenge to your taste. I was merely pointing out to what you wrote in ALL CAPS that it wasn't a genre, as if that was how it's presented and that it's wrong to refer to it as such.
Aug. 24th, 2011 12:35 am (UTC)
Calm thyself. I was talking to itachi, who called it a genre. And lots of other people are gonna call it a genre too, and I'd be twirling around being all "but it's not! a genre!" much like you are doing here, and thus: no competition for me. See?

I mean, I get pedantic about the little things that don't actually matter, and for big stuff I'm more wishy-washy. It would all just make me crazy, particularly if I had to work with a team I didn't personally choose.

And, by the way, I write in ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME. Quite often, in fact, to indicate my INTENTIONALLY HYPERBOLIC TONE. I would be doing the LJ equivalent of running around with my arms flailing above my head: IT'S NOT A GENRE! OH MY GOOOD YOU GUUUYS!!!
Aug. 24th, 2011 12:45 am (UTC)
There is only one thing that annoys me more than someone telling me to calm myself when I am clearly quite calm. Believe me, if I wasn't, you'd know it. Because even though people always claim it's in jest, it's not. I know this is probably just you and how you are. But it's really very condescending and that is the one thing that annoys me more. It seems most of our conversations go this way. So I find it best if we just call this a lost cause with no hard feelings, just a personality clash, and defriend.
Aug. 24th, 2011 01:00 am (UTC)
Great scott! It's no skin off my nose if you friend or defriend me. Look, there's a reason I stopped commenting on your LJ weeks ago, you know? IDK why you needed to come in here and inform me of stuff I already knew. I'm sorry if this comment thread has ruined your day, because it certainly has ruined mine. I do sincerely hope that your competition thing is a success and considering how detail-oriented you are, it will likely be as hitch-free as these things get. Now please do me the favor of leaving my LJ alone, britney spears style.

Eff pthon maaaan, it is solidly NOT FOR ME. Maybe it was just the team that I had but blah.

i'm sure that makes the whole team feel great.
Aug. 28th, 2011 06:21 am (UTC)
I want you to know that the reason I said that is each team has a different sort of community feel and level of interaction and stuff. It's all in flocked communities that I don't get to see. So it is possible that had I been in another team there would have been more chances for me to make fast friends or kept my energy for the pthon going stronger over a long period of time, had the timing, regularity, and subjects of posts been something different (not more or less, just different, in some unknown, possible way) so as to mesh more with what I'm into and what times I was around and so-on. I missed the vast majority of the club things, for example, because of my being asleep at the wrong times. So, like I said. MAYBE it was the team I had. But the fundamental aspects of the pthon are not fun for me. POSSIBLY I could have had those edges shaven off by being randomly grouped with other people who I still never got the chance to really get to know. So, instead of writing that few frillion words, I said "maybe is was just the team."
Aug. 28th, 2011 10:31 am (UTC)
that's as maybe but you singled out team pride specifically and you had to know that in having team pride on your flist - especially the mod of said team - one of us was going to see it?

i can understand what you're saying but you have to understand what that looks like? i've already apologised in the team comm for my absence (not to mention making sure that someone else on the mod team was available to step in for me) - and the reasons behind it which were legitimate and tbh, acceptable - but this just makes me feel like the worst mod in the history of ever. i made mistakes, i'm not going to lie, but i felt like i did a good job right up until the last two weeks and seeing this i'm like OH WELL, maybe i didn't!

so yeah. sorry if there were reasons behind it but frankly, you could have worded it that way. i would rather a verbose response than feel the way i do now.

It has nothing to do with you as the mod or anything you did. It was a matter of CHANCE, okay? CHANCE. *possibility*. I'm not insulting you or anyone on the team and I'm not exalting any other team and I'm not saying that anything would definitely have been different had I been placed somewhere else. You did a fine job as far as I know, but remember, this was the only year I've done pthon and the only year I've known of its existence. I was trying something new and it had the potential to work out for me but it didn't, because of the things *I* did, things *I* felt, the expectations *I* had, the motivation *I* did not possess, the incidental unrelated stuff that happened to *me* during the time of the pthon. None of it, SERIOUSLY, none of it, has a single thing to do with ACTUAL actions or interactions that occurred on the actual team or with the actual pthon. It is me, blaming MYSELF, for my OWN dissatisfaction, and the fact that people seem to be CONSTANTLY perceiving things I intend as attacks on MYSELF as attacks on THEM is driving me nuts. I can't go two metaphorical feet without stepping on someone's toes. And if that's how it is, well frankly, it's clearly too crowded and I'm glad that I'll be continuing not to participate in any further competitions. Because *I* am bad at them. And apparently also bad at not carving out people's hearts with a rusty spoon.
