fanarts: The Yeare-ly Boke

Pretend, if you will, that this is a page from some sort of "Ye Olde Compendiuhm of Wizard-ly Perfonnelle, with Bonuf Commentaries"

So, despite being a total folklore NUT who does crazy things like read scholarly papers on myth for FUN, I couldn't think of a good fairytale to crib from that I could actually draw. (See, it seems like I'm pretty good at drawing, but that's because I play to my strengths. The second I start trying new things it's all downhill, so I limit myself when I know I'll have an audience.) So I ended up just drawing a picture of Freddie, assuming I'd be able to hack on some kind of fairytale thing later. Well then I drew him, and OH MAN, I finally got his HAIR right. And every fairytale thing ever involves a HAT. I couldnt bear the though of erasing it... so I worked around it.

Freddie being a prince is cute and all, but totally off-mark. He's definitely the wizarding sort. I don't know why he's being such a jerk though, I drew him a seriously awesome hat, with stars on and all.

I like it a lot. I like the kind of style you used with your drawing and the coloring. Great job. =)

Thanks, I tried to tone down my usual hyper-saturated super textured usual thing and go more subtle this time. :)

I like that hyper-saturated super textured usual thing >=(

His hair is real nice and his eyebrows have character.
Dec. 3rd, 2009 08:08 pm (UTC)
What, I can't switch it up once in a while?

If his eyebrows didn't have character, he wouldn't be Freddie B. :)

I hate to say this, but the rest of the picture doesn't quite live up to the hair.
Dec. 3rd, 2009 12:06 pm (UTC)
shhhhhhhhhhh i know that but you dont have to SAY that. yeeesh
Dec. 3rd, 2009 12:18 pm (UTC)
Would you prefer if I implied it?

Here in the land of the freedom eagle, if we don't have something nice to say, we don't say anything at all.

(except when we do and then you can guess what happens i mean look at our economy dang)

That must be why Twilight got published then. Someone at her publisher's office should have stood up and said "Stephanie, if this is meant to be true love then you're doing it wrong." Do you see what you've unleashed on the world?

(And what does the collapse of the sub-prime market have to do with saying things that aren't nice? Or have I got this depression all wrong?)

Twilight got published because Meyer IS A VAMPIRE HERSELF. The proper sort with mind-control. An extension of dark Satanic magic is the only plausible explanation.

OMG HIS HAIR! <33333333

I also reeeeeeaally love the subtle colors. How they look like they could have been a wash of sorts.

Also that hat is AWESOME.

<33333 this.

Aw, thanks! I tried to go for like, a hand-colored sort of look? That's why he has pouty pink lips. :P

I want that hat IRL, I would wear it every day.
Dec. 3rd, 2009 02:30 pm (UTC)
The hat! It even has a little jingle bell off the end of it!
Dec. 3rd, 2009 08:17 pm (UTC)
That's so the senior wizards can hear when he's coming. They scramble to look like they're doing something productive.

I love your drawing style and am honestly envious of it.
Dec. 3rd, 2009 08:46 pm (UTC)
I'm always really envious of people who can do stylized cartoony things, and have never much liked realism as a drawing style. I'm glad to know other people appreciate it. :)
Dec. 3rd, 2009 09:35 pm (UTC)
I draw more stylized and have a lot of trouble with realism. Funny how that works with the whole art appreciation thing.
Dec. 3rd, 2009 11:08 pm (UTC)
^ That's me! OMG anyone who can draw realistically make me so happy. All I've got are silly cartoon interpretations. Even when I try to draw SUPER REALISTIC I end up with something kind of cartoony anyway. *suffering sigh*

Oh, I love this. I particularly like how the detail you've put into Freddie's hair and face contrasts with the simple, muted colours in the rest of the drawing.

This is definitely my favourite of the entries so far.
Dec. 3rd, 2009 08:49 pm (UTC)
Yes, I definitely did that on purpose, and didn't just throw up my hands and declare the thing done at 3 in the morning. :D

Thanks for it being your favorite! And it doesn't even have any threesomes. ;P

I am totally thinking that Freddie would fit right in with his good buddy, Merlin. He doesn't like his hat either :P
Dec. 3rd, 2009 08:51 pm (UTC)
People keep telling me to watch that show, and I keep telling them "omgawd no I can't handle watching my most favorite tale ever in the history of myths being so soundly bastardized! aaaargh!" So I'll probably wait until it's been canceled and then watch it all in a straight doritos-fueled month-long marathon and love the shit out of it.

Anyway, Freddie and Merlin need to understand that hats are important in establishing that you're a VIP in a society that lacks photography and massive facial recognition.

It doesn't show up for me and that makes me sad. D:

LJ Scrapbook is doing maintenance at the moment. It'll be back, I swear.
Dec. 4th, 2009 06:37 am (UTC)
I can see it now! :D

The whole thing is a beaut, but I have to say that I am IN LOVE with the textures. I feel like I could totally reach into my computer and touch it only I can't.
Dec. 4th, 2009 07:21 am (UTC)
Ancient chinese secret: that's because the textures are *photographs* of *real things*.
