Dear people of the two how to train your dragon communities,

In this, the baby stages of fandom, two communities where most things are constantly crossposted, have essentially identical rules AND members, and no source material beyond one movie and an art book, cannot stand. One of you is going to have to Stand Down.

And no, I'm not going to do it. I staunchly refuse to involve myself in another small fandom apart from lurking. HARRUMPH.

Sincerely,
~Me

Or one could narrow its focus -- to a pairing or species or fanart or whatever.

trufax. I really don't want any smut, and one of the comms just seems to be FULL of it. I'm totally fine with there BEING smut, but if there was a comm that was exclusively FOR the smut, I bet a lot of it would stay there, and there could be friendly affiliation and whatnot. Then the other comm could be for all levels of maturity and whenever someone shows up with the porny things they can be politely pointed to the naughty comm.
Or at least, that's how it would work in an ideal world. Sigh.

Sure -- it's more reasonable to require limits for a fandom whose canon is aimed at sprogs. you could make yours the 'Safe for kids' one, ie no graphic violence or porn but hand-holding and timid smooches being okay regardless of genders involved.

no no, I think putting family friendly limits on any comm in fandom is a completely stupid move. People are going to show up and people are going to want porn and not know limitations because every culture is different and then people are going to get told off for breaking rules and so-on. Then there will be schisms about one group of people being more uptight than another group of people and the other group will call the first group a bunch of perverts and so-on. Sound familiar? Yeah.

The only way I've seen this work is to go the other way. Like, a lot of older entrenched fandoms, like, InuYasha, Harry Potter, XFiles... They have archives that are for every type of rating, and then you have your niche porn archives that are almost exclusively for the porny fanfic and the dirty fanart. Or there are subsections of the archives for that purpose. So you occasionally come across things that are more suggestive than explicit in the adult sections, but it's almost always sexual or hyper violent, and then in the general communities or archives there's everything else, PLUS the porny stuff, with very clear warnings as to the adult content. It seems to work pretty well.

In iCarly fandom, almost every comm and so-on accepts every rating of fanwork, and the ones that don't are relegated to a slow and sad death. But there are specific kink memes, and "adults only" subsections of forums, that are geared towards exclusively the grownup stuff. Everyone seems to intuitively get how it works, nobody's labeled a prude, and everybody tends to only comment on or click on the smut if they're actually interested in it.
